Excerpts from Chapter 20

Married?

The Master of Ceremonies paused for dramatic effect.  Drums rolled again.  "First Runner-Up, Glenda Joyce Phinney. "

What?  Did someone say my name?  Glenda stood stunned, speechless and motionless. Carol came beaming across the stage with the bouquet of red roses . The Master of Ceremonies held the biggest shiny gold and black walnut trophy she had ever seen. Ike somebody hit the mirrored light ball with a spotlight and the room swam with the spinning lights.

Glenda didn’t even hear the rest of the ceremony.  She just stood there in amazement, looking at that trophy. What a thrill. I don't even care who wins, she thought.  Nothing like this ever happened to me.

The Miss Portland Pageant was pretty big news in Portland back in 1965.  Everybody, who was anybody was at the Hilton that night. The band played wonderful music. Glenda danced the night away with her high school sweetheart, Steve Durham.

Everybody was so nice
